New Study Says Vitamin D Improves Health of Women with Type 2 Diabetes

A Chicago based pilot research study found that vitamin D improves the health of females with type 2 diabetes in several ways. Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin. The team of researchers who conducted the study have received funding to expand the research to follow a larger number of patients.

The team of researchers who are from the Loyola University Chicago Niehoff School of Nursing found that among female type 2 diabetics with symptoms of depression, taking supplements of the vitamin resulted in a compelling drop in blood pressure, elevation of mood, and slight weight loss, according to ScienceDaily. They presented their data at the American Diabetes Association 73rd Scientific Sessions.

The pilot research study followed 46 females who averaged 55 years old. On average the women had suffered from diabetes for eight years and showed insufficient vitamin D levels (18 ng/ml). During the pilot study, they took 50,000 International Units (IUs) weekly for six months. At that point, vitamin D levels in the blood had climbed into the sufficient range, an average of 38 ng/ml, and moods were elevated. Scores on an initial depression survey moved from 26.8 to 12.2 at the half-year mark, indcating a significant drop in symptoms.


Average blood pressure levels fell from 140.4 mm Hg for the higher number to 132.5. Average weight dropped from 226.1 to 223.6 pounds.

The National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse (NDIC) reports that diabetes affects 8.3 percent of the U.S. population, or 25.8 million individuals. Of these individuals, an estimated 7 million remain undiagnosed.

Type 2 diabetes, once known as non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, typically starts as insulin resistance. Between 90 to 95 percent Of diagnosed adult diabetics, have type 2 diabetes. Diabetics are particularly at risk for a vitamin D deficiency or insufficiency, possibly due to eating curtailed amounts of foods rich in the vitamin, lack of sun exposure, genetic issues, and/or being obese.

On Thursday May 23, 2013 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it will allow marketing of the first HbA1c test labeled for diagnosing diabetes by doctors. The device that was approved is the COBAS INTEGRA 800 Tina-quant HbA1c assay (Tina-quant HbA1cDx assay) which is made by Roche of Basel, Switzerland. The Roche North American headquarters are located in Indianapolis, IN.

Currently HbA1c tests or A1c tests are FDA approved for monitoring a patient’s blood glucose (sugar) control, but not for diagnosing diabetes. A1c tests will measure the percentage of hemoglobin A1c that is bound to glucose. This test will give both the patient and health care professional a average glucose level over a three-month period.

The FDA said over-the-counter HbA1c tests should not be used by patients to diagnose diabetes, and only a qualified healthcare professional should make a diagnosis of diabetes.

Walnuts Can Help Reduce the Risk of Developing Type 2 Diabetes


According to new research, eating walnuts two or three times a week can reduce the risk of developing type two diabetes by almost a quarter.

A new study of nearly to 140,000 adult women in the U.S. shows consistent regular servings of small portion of nuts can have a powerful preventive effect against the disease that is close to becoming a world wide epidemic.

The study found that women who ate 28 gram portions of walnuts at least twice a week were 24% less likely of developing type two diabetes than those who rarely or never consumed them.

The latest research findings are now published in the Journal of Nutrition. This wouldn’t be the first time research has discovered the benefits of eating walnuts to help prevent the development of diabetes and reduce the risk of cancer. Previous research have shown similar benefits to eating nuts.

However, this discovery is thought to be one of the largest to find that consistently snacking on nuts can help prevent the disease.

Although the latest research was carried out on females, it’s likely that the same preventive benefits will apply to men.

According to the Centers for Disease Control, diabetes affects 25.8 million people in the U.S. That’s roughly 8.3% of the U.S. population. Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States.

The researchers found eating walnuts one to three times a month curbed the risk by 4%, once a week by 13% and at least twice a week by 24%.

The new finding were detailed in a report with researchers saying: ‘These results suggest higher walnut consumption is associated with a significantly lower risk and prevention of developing type two diabetes in women.’
